What is a Tile Calculator?
A Tile Calculator estimates the number of tiles, boxes, adhesive, and grout you need for a flooring or wall tiling project. It accounts for tile size, room dimensions, and wastage for cutting and breakage.
Running short during installation means waiting weeks for a new batch (which may have slight color variations). Buying too many is wasteful. Our calculator helps you order the exact quantity with appropriate buffer.
The calculator supports multiple tile types (Vitrified, Ceramic, Marble, Porcelain) and automatically calculates adhesive and grout quantities based on your tile choice.
Room Presets
Quick estimates for Bathroom, Kitchen, Bedroom, Living Room, and Balcony with typical dimensions.
Multiple Sizes
Support for 1×1, 1.5×1.5, 2×2, 2×4, and 4×4 ft tiles with correct box counts.
Type-Based Estimate
Adhesive and grout quantities adjusted for Vitrified, Ceramic, Marble, or Porcelain tiles.
Box Calculation
Shows tiles per box, coverage per box, and total boxes to order.
How to Calculate Tiles
Enter Room Size
Measure length × width in feet. Use presets for common rooms or enter custom dimensions.
Select Tile Size
Choose from 5 standard sizes. Override tiles per box if your brand differs from default.
Adjust Wastage
10% is standard. Use 15-20% for complex rooms, diagonal layouts, or pattern matching.

Tile Types Comparison
Low porosity, very hard. High-traffic floors. Premium choice.
Good for walls and low-traffic. Budget-friendly option.
Natural stone. Luxury look. Needs sealing and care.
Dense, durable. Best for outdoor/wet areas.
Why Buy Boxes (Not Loose)?
- Same batch: Tiles in one box are from same batch - consistent color
- Protection: Boxes protect tiles during transport
- Easy counting: Know exact coverage per box
- Return policy: Unopened boxes can usually be returned
Pro Tips for Tile Installation
Dry layout first - Lay tiles without adhesive to check pattern and cuts.
Mix boxes - Open 3-4 boxes and mix tiles for uniform shade distribution.
Keep extras - Store 1-2 sealed boxes for future repairs.
Check batch - Ensure all boxes have same batch number for color match.
Use spacers - Consistent grout lines look professional.
Clean as you go - Remove adhesive before it hardens.
Common Use Cases
Home Renovation
Bedroom, living room, or full house flooring. Use presets for quick estimates.
Bathroom Upgrade
Floor + wall tiles. Calculate each surface separately, then combine.
Commercial Projects
Office, retail space. Large format tiles with accurate box counts.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many tiles do I need for 100 sq ft?
It depends on tile size: 1×1 ft tiles = 100 tiles, 2×2 ft tiles = 25 tiles, 2×4 ft tiles = 12-13 tiles. Add 10% wastage: for 2×2 tiles, order 28 tiles (7 boxes of 4). Our calculator does this math automatically.
How many tiles come in one box?
Standard tile box contents: 2×2 ft = 4 tiles (16 sq.ft coverage), 2×4 ft = 2 tiles (16 sq.ft), 1×1 ft = 8-12 tiles, 1.5×1.5 ft = 5-6 tiles. This varies by brand - always check box label.
Why should I add 10% extra tiles?
The 10% wastage covers: cuts at room edges and corners, breakage during installation, pattern matching waste, skirting tiles, and spare tiles for future repairs. For complex rooms or diagonal patterns, use 15-20%.
What is tile adhesive and how much do I need?
Tile adhesive (or tile gum) bonds tiles to floor/wall. Coverage: approximately 4-5 kg per square meter for standard tiles, more for large format or uneven surfaces. A 20kg bag covers about 4-5 sq.m. Our calculator estimates based on tile type.
How much grout do I need for tiles?
Grout fills gaps between tiles. Quantity depends on tile size, gap width, and tile thickness. Larger tiles = less grout. Approximately 0.5 kg per sq.m for 2×2 ft tiles with standard 2mm gap. Our calculator provides estimates.
Which tile size is best for small rooms?
For small rooms like bathrooms: 1×1 ft or 1.5×1.5 ft tiles work well - fewer cuts, easier handling. Large tiles (2×4 ft) make small rooms feel bigger but require more cutting. Balance aesthetics with practicality.
What is the difference between vitrified and ceramic tiles?
Vitrified tiles: Low porosity (0.5%), harder, more durable, suitable for high-traffic areas. Ceramic tiles: Higher porosity (3-6%), softer, good for walls and low-traffic floors. Vitrified costs more but lasts longer.
Should I buy extra boxes for future repairs?
Yes, always keep 1-2 extra boxes. Reasons: tiles may crack later, batch variations cause color mismatch if you buy later, and the exact design may be discontinued. Store extras in a dry place.
How to calculate tiles for walls?
Same method as floor: Wall Area = Length × Height. Deduct windows and doors. Add all walls together. Apply 10-15% wastage (more cuts on walls). For bathroom dado (half-wall), calculate only the covered height (usually 7 feet).
What orientation is best for rectangular tiles?
For 2×4 ft tiles: Lay length-wise to make narrow rooms feel wider. In long corridors, run tiles perpendicular to length. Brick pattern (50% offset) hides cuts better than straight grid. Always do dry layout first.
