What is a Flooring Calculator?

A Flooring Calculator estimates how many packs of laminate, vinyl, or hardwood flooring you need based on room dimensions. Flooring is sold in boxes (packs), not individual planks, so knowing the exact count prevents over-ordering or running short mid-project.

Our calculator supports 5 flooring types with typical pack coverage, lets you adjust wastage (5-20%) based on room complexity, and calculates skirting and underlayment requirements automatically.

Use the room presets for quick estimates or enter custom dimensions. Download your materials list or print for shopping.

5 Flooring Types

Laminate 8mm/12mm, Engineered Wood, SPC Vinyl, Solid Hardwood.

Wastage Slider

Adjust 5-20% based on room shape and installation pattern.

Skirting Calculator

Running feet with door deductions. Piece count for 8ft strips.

Underlayment

Automatic calculation of foam/felt underlayment packs needed.

Wastage Guide

5-7% - Simple Rectangular Rooms

No alcoves, no angles. Straight cuts only.

10% - Standard Rooms

Some door frames, 1-2 small angles. Safe default.

15% - Complex Layouts

Bay windows, alcoves, multiple door frames.

20% - Diagonal or First-Timer

Diagonal installation or DIY with learning curve.

Skirting Calculation

Skirting covers the gap where floor meets wall:

Skirting = 2 × (Length + Width)

Subtract: 3 feet per door opening

Pieces = Running feet ÷ 8

Standard skirting comes in 8ft (2.4m) lengths. Some brands offer 6ft pieces.

Pro Tips for Flooring Purchase

Check box label - Pack coverage varies by brand and thickness.

Buy same batch - Color can vary between production runs.

Order 2-3 extra packs - For repairs and matching later.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many packs of laminate flooring do I need?

Divide room area (sq.m) by pack coverage (usually 1.9-2.2 sq.m per pack), then add 10% wastage. Example: 20 sq.m room ÷ 1.91 sq.m/pack × 1.10 = 11.5 → Order 12 packs. Always round up.

What size does one pack of laminate cover?

Standard packs cover 1.5-2.5 sq.m depending on brand. 8mm laminate: ~1.9-2.2 sq.m. 12mm laminate: ~1.5-1.8 sq.m (thicker planks = fewer per pack). Always check the box label for exact coverage.

How much wastage should I add for flooring?

Add 5-10% for simple rectangular rooms. Add 10-15% for rooms with alcoves, bay windows, or angles. Add 15-20% for diagonal installation or complex layouts. 10% is a safe default for most rooms.

What is underlayment and do I need it?

Underlayment is a foam/felt layer placed under laminate for cushioning, sound dampening, and moisture protection. Yes, you need it for laminate flooring unless the planks have pre-attached backing. Sold in rolls covering 10-15 sq.m.

How do I calculate skirting for a room?

Skirting = Room perimeter (2 × Length + 2 × Width) minus door openings (typically 3ft per door). Skirting is sold in 8ft pieces. Divide total running feet by 8 and round up to get piece count.

What is the difference between laminate and vinyl flooring?

Laminate: Made of pressed wood with photo layer. Not waterproof. Good for bedrooms/living rooms. Vinyl/SPC: Made of PVC/stone composite. 100% waterproof. Good for kitchens/bathrooms. Vinyl is softer underfoot.

Should I install flooring parallel or perpendicular?

Install planks parallel to the longest wall or the main light source for the most spacious look. For hallways, run parallel to the length. Perpendicular installation can make narrow rooms feel wider but uses more material.

How much does laminate flooring cost?

Laminate 8mm: ₹80-150/sq.ft. Laminate 12mm: ₹120-200/sq.ft. Engineered wood: ₹200-400/sq.ft. SPC Vinyl: ₹100-180/sq.ft. Solid hardwood: ₹300-600/sq.ft. Installation adds ₹25-50/sq.ft extra.

Can I install laminate flooring myself (DIY)?

Yes, click-lock laminate is DIY-friendly. You need: underlayment, spacers, pull bar, tapping block, and saw. Takes 4-6 hours per room. Watch tutorials first. Ensure subfloor is level and clean. Acclimate planks for 48 hours before installing.

Should I order extra flooring packs?

Yes, always order 2-3 extra packs beyond your calculated need. Same batch planks match perfectly. Production batches vary in shade. Extras useful for future repairs. Leftover packs can often be returned if unopened.
