How to Write a Check Correctly

  1. Date: Write today's date in the top right corner.
  2. Payee: Write the person or company name clearly on the "Pay to the Order of" line.
  3. Numeric Amount: Write the number (e.g., 1,234.56) in the small box.
  4. Written Amount: On the long line, write out "One Thousand Two Hundred Thirty-Four and 56/100". Draw a line through any remaining empty space.
  5. Signature: Sign legibly on the bottom right line.

Common Mistakes

  • Leaving Blank Space.

Never leave large gaps on the amount line. Someone could add "Hundred" or "Thousand" to change the value.

  • Using "And" Incorrectly.

Technically, "and" represents the decimal point. "One Hundred and Five" means 100.05. "One Hundred Five" means 105. Be precise!

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I write cents on a check?

For cents, write the number as a fraction over 100. For example, $150.75 would be written as 'One Hundred Fifty and 75/100'. On our tool, we spell it out as 'Dollars and Cents' for clarity, but on a real check, the fraction is standard.

What if the number and written words are different on a check?

Legally, the written words prevail over the numerical amount. If you write '$100' in the box but 'One Thousand' on the line, the bank is supposed to process it as $1,000.

How do I write a check for 00 cents?

You should still indicate it to prevent alteration. Write '...and 00/100' or '...and no/100'. Our tool adds 'and Zero Cents' in currency mode to show this explicitly.

Is 'And' needed when writing numbers?

In formal US English, 'and' is used only before the cents (decimal part). 'One Hundred One' is preferred over 'One Hundred and One'. However, in British English (and casual use), 'One Hundred and One' is common.

What is the largest number this tool supports?

This tool supports numbers up to 999 Trillion. That's a 1 followed by 14 zeros! Enough for the GDP of the entire world.

How do I convert numbers to Indian Rupees (INR)?

Select 'Indian Rupees (₹)' from the format dropdown. We handle the specific 'Lakh' (1,00,000) and 'Crore' (1,00,00,000) numbering system automatically.

Can I copy the text directly?

Yes! Click the Copy icon next to the result to instantly copy the converted text to your clipboard.

What is 'Title Case' vs 'Sentence Case'?

Title Case: 'One Hundred Dollars'. Sentence Case: 'One hundred dollars'. Contracts typically use Title Case for amounts, while essays use lowercase.

Do you support British Pounds?

Yes! Select 'British Pound (£)' to convert amounts into Pounds and Pence.

Why convert numbers to words?

Writing amounts in words (e.g., on checks or contracts) prevents fraud. It is much harder to alter 'One Thousand' into 'Nine Thousand' than it is to change '1000' to '9000'.
