Understanding Your Standing

In national exams like JEE Main and NEET, your raw score matters less than your relative performance. NTA releases results in "NTA Score" or Percentile. Your percentile tells you what percentage of students scored less than you. This tool helps you decode that number into your actual All India Rank (AIR).

Counseling Strategy

Most colleges (JoSAA/CSAB) define cutoffs by Rank, not percentile. Use our predicted rank to filter colleges on official websites.

  • Check Last Year Closing Ranks (OR-CR)
  • Filter by your Category (General/EWS/OBC)
  • Always keep a buffer of ±500 ranks

Reality Check

Remember that Total Candidates increase every year.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate Rank from Percentile?
The standard formula is Rank = ((100 - Percentile) × Total Candidates) / 100. Always round up to the next whole number. For example, if you have 90 percentile among 100 students, (100-90)*100/100 = 10 people are ahead of you, so you are Rank 11 (or top 10).
How accurate is this rank predictor for JEE Main 2026?
It is mathematically precise based on the NTA formula. However, the final rank depends on the TOTAL number of unique candidates, which NTA releases only after Session 2. We use estimated figures (approx 14 Lakhs) until then.
Why does my rank change with total candidates?
Percentile is relative. Being in the top 1% of 100 people means Rank 1. Being in the top 1% of 10 Lakh people means Rank 10,000. The more students appearing, the lower your rank will be for the same percentile.
Does this work for category rank (OBC/SC/ST)?
No, this predicts your "Common Rank List" (CRL) or General Rank. Category ranks depend on the distribution of candidates within that specific category, which is not public data.
What is a good percentile for NITs?
For top NITs (Trichy, Warangal, Surathkal), you typically need 99+ percentile (Rank < 10,000). For newer NITs, 95-97 percentile is often sufficient for core branches.
Can I use this for GATE?
Yes! The mathematical logic of percentile is universal. Just select "GATE" or enter the total number of candidates appearing in your specific paper.
Why do I see decimals in my rank sometimes?
Real ranks are always whole numbers. If a calculator shows decimals, it is just raw math. Our tool automatically rounds up to give you the realistic integer rank.
Marks vs Percentile - How are they related?
They are NOT fixed. If a paper is easy, 200 marks might get you 99 percentile. If it is tough, 150 marks might get you 99 percentile. Percentile depends on difficulty, not just raw score.
Is 100 Percentile Rank 1?
Yes, typically there are multiple 100 percentilers (toppers). All of them are technically Rank 1, but NTA uses tie-breaking rules (Age, Negative Marks) to assign unique ranks like 1, 2, 3.
Does 90 percentile mean I got 90% marks?
NO! 90 percentile means you scored better than 90% of students. You could have scored just 30% marks in a very hard exam and still get 90 percentile.
